Retinol Care For New Users
Retinol is one of the best products you can add to your skincare routine to smooth, brighten, and renew your skin. But since it’s strong, your skin needs time to get used to it. That’s why it’s so important to start slowly and follow the right steps.
Getting Started
For your first two weeks, use your retinol every other night. Apply it using the “sandwich method”: put on your high-quality medical-grade moisturizer first, then apply your retinol, and then follow with another layer of moisturizer. This protects your skin barrier while still letting the retinol do its job.
Moving to Daily Use
After two weeks, if your skin is adjusting well, you can begin using retinol every night. The ultimate goal is daily use, since that’s when retinol gives the best results. But if your skin still feels sensitive, stick with every other night until your skin adjusts—or even take it slower. What matters most is that you eventually get to everyday use. Sun Protection is Essential (see below).
What’s Normal
Don’t be alarmed if you notice redness, dryness, flaking, burning, or irritation. These are very common when starting retinol and usually improve as your skin adapts. If this happens and you are at your wit’s end, please text us to help troubleshoot before you give up! Often, it’s a small adjustment we need to make in your routine to make it work better for you. We are here for you!
Protecting Your Skin
Always wear sunscreen during the day (never at night), since retinol makes your skin more susceptible to sun damage. I promise there is a method to my madness at your initial consultation. When we review skincare, the 3/4 essential products I recommend all work together to not only help you, but also to protect you. Finally, keep your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water (don’t forget your pinch of salt!).
